Shifting Geographies of Proximity: Korean-led Evangelical Christian Missions and the U.S. Empire

Ju Hui Judy Han

Abstract:

How do we live in and with empire? Ju Hui Judy Han’s essay, “Shifting Geographies of Proximity: Korean-led Evangelical Christian Missions and the U.S. Empire” was published in Ethnographies of U.S. Empire, co-edited by Carole McGranahan and John F. Collins (Duke University Press, 2018). Han analyzes the linkages between the ethics of humanitarian service, imperative of religious expansion, mandate for geopolitical security, and logic of neoliberal capitalism and discusses how Korean-led missionary movement conjured the specter of Islam as threat and competitor following the hostage crisis in Afghanistan in 2007.
