Biography

Leandro Stoffels (he/him/they/them) is a Ph.D. student in Gender Studies, specializing in the intersection of queer activism and popular music in Brazil. His research examines how contemporary and past generations of Brazilian musicians use their art to challenge hegemonic norms of gender and sexuality, and how queer communities use music to demand rights, celebrate their existence, and create spaces of belonging. His work brings together queer ethnomusicology, Global South feminisms, media and historical analysis to investigate the relationship between performance, popular culture, and LGBTQ+ activism in Brazil. His broader interests include the ways pop culture and media are utilized as tools of activism, with a particular focus on the performative and affective dimensions of queer bodies in Latin American cultures. He also explores the role of digital humanities and social media in advancing queer and racialized understandings of identity and place in Brazil. Leandro holds a bachelor’s degree in Communication – Cultural Studies from the Federal University of Bahia and a master’s degree in Communication from the Fluminense Federal University, both in Brazil.
