Research Interest

Cihangir’s research interests encompass queer sexuality in the greater Middle East and its diasporas, sexual migration, and state violence. His current ethnographic research investigates state violence against women and LGBTIQ+ individuals in Turkey, as well as the experiences of women and LGBTIQ+ Turkish migrants in Germany.

Biography

Cihangir is a PhD student in Gender Studies at UCLA. Prior to joining the Gender Studies Department, he earned a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science and International Relations from Boğaziçi University in Istanbul and a Master’s degree in Anthropology and Sociology from the Geneva Graduate Institute (IHEID). His master’s thesis explored the dynamics of sexual public spaces in Geneva, focusing on how public spaces are designed to exclude sexual minorities, and how cruisers reclaim/fail to reclaim these spaces through their interactions with both the environment and each other. As a queer activist, Cihangir was a member of the Istanbul Pride Week Organization Committee in 2023 and served as vice-president of the Queer International Student Assembly (QISA) in Geneva in 2022.
